Your questions answered....

WHAT IS CONFIRMATION?

Our membership of the Church family begins with Baptism, and at that time parents and God-parents promise to encourage their children to come to Mass, say their prayers, live by trust in God and come to Confirmation.

Confirmation then, is our opportunity as adults to say for ourselves that we believe in God and that we wish to have a living relationship with him.

WHO CAN BE CONFIRMED?

Confirmation is open to those who are able to speak for themselves and know what they want for their life. For this reason Confirmation is open to all adults of any age and to older children (approx. school year 6 and above).

It is never too late to get confirmed - the Bishop has confirmed people as old as 90 in the past.

AM I EXPECTED TO ATTEND CHURCH?

YES! ~ because that’s what Confirmation is - a ‘confirming’ for yourself that you believe in God and want God to be a part of your daily life. Coming to Church to worship God is central to the life of Christians.

WHAT HAPPENS AT CONFIRMATION?

The Bishop will come and take the Confirmation service during which the candidates are asked to ‘confirm’ their belief in God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Don’t worry - you don’t have to do this on your own but together with the other candidates.

The Bishop will lay hands on your head and ask that the Holy Spirit come upon you to renew your life. He will also anoint you with Holy Oil on the forehead.

WHEN DOES CONFIRMATION HAPPEN?

Confirmation takes place at St. John’s Church once every year. The service usually occurs in the autumn in either November or December.

But before that there are preparation groups where the candidates get together and learn more about the Church and the life of faith. These are lead by the priests and take place about once a week. They start at the end of the summer each year and are an important part of the process of getting confirmed.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Confirmation is offered free of charge, provided you are prepared to make the commitment to attend Church and the preparation sessions beforehand.
